Chiachio & Giannone

Leo Chiachio, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1969; Daniel Giannone, born in Cordoba, Argentina, 1964; live and work in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Ours is a collaborative process-based method, a way in which we can expand the boundaries of our work. We have recently focused on embroidery as a technical process for developing images. Embroidery is a traditional technique associated with women. In view of this, we feel as though we have resuscitated a handcrafted art form and reconfigured it for the dual practice of a male couple. We also wish to show that two men can access this world with a sense of freedom, as two children playing. We are interested in working with simple materials—primary school art supplies, such as glitter, flexible fabric, cardboard, and colored pencils—as well as domestic materials, such as thread, cloth, and buttons, for a kind of transformative embellishment. Self portraiture is an integral part of all of our work, and then the image of Piolin (our pet dachshund) began appearing as another character. The scenarios in which we situate ourselves in our images arise from our research on legends and myths of different cultures.
